Nvidia is dumping yet another TV console on the market, although this one is apparently the first to be built on Android TV.The console, called Shield, is designed to deliver video – including ultra HD (UHD, aka 4K), music, apps, and games. Although it can deliver video, the company is positioning the product as primarily a game system.

Games include those accessible from the company’s own Grid gaming service. Players can download, stream, and purchase games though the service.

Nvidia, which has long specialized in graphics processing chips, built the Shield around its new Tegra X1 processor.

The console expands the company’s Shield product line, which also includes tablets and a handheld gaming device.

Nvidia will start selling the console with one controller for $199 starting in May.

« Shield will change the way we enjoy digital entertainment at home, » said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of Nvidia. « It’s an incredibly powerful, efficient and advanced living room entertainment device. It’s the best Android TV experience. And it can transform into a serious gaming machine. It’s made to game. »

Other features include support for Google Voice Search and access to Android’s app ecosystem.
