Ateme demo’s LiveSphere on a set-top

Ateme said it is demonstrating LiveSphere working on a set-top box, a significant step toward commercializing the technology that gives TV watchers full control of the view from a 360 degree camera.

Ateme introduced the LiveSphere concept last year, together with Kolor and Finwe, partners in the development of the technology. They demonstrated LiveSphere’s ability to show a fully spherical view (of the type now familiar from Google Maps), giving the viewer the option to look in literally every direction.

This year, the company showed the LiveSphere application running on an Android set-top box (STB) reference design based on the STMicroelectronics Cannes chipset. The view was selected with a remote control.

The Cannes chipset is capable of decoding 4K ultra high definition video. The UHD decoding performance in the STB allows the capture and transmission of the entire spherical video with a great level of detail, Ateme said.

The dynamic selection of the field of view relies on a remote by 4MOD Technology. The selected field of view is output over HDMI to any HD or UHD TV set.

This demonstration shows an interactive high-quality television experience that service providers can offer to their broadband subscribers with an UHD-capable STB, even when they do not yet own an UHDTV set, Ateme said.

Sports is an obvious application. Last year’s demonstration with a camera set on the stage at a rock concert was also compelling. Also obvious is the potential for any virtual reality application.

Ismail Allalcha, manager of strategic & ecosystem marketing, Digital Consumer Group, STMicroelectronics, said: “LiveSphere is a real innovation in the way we watch television, providing the end user with the possibility to navigate inside live events using a remote control. This demonstration confirms the maturity and performance of our well-established Cannes and Monaco chipset families, which can reach resolutions of up to Ultra HDp60 a definite advantage for 360-degree video applications.”
